Chinese Medicine for Men
It is the belief that Chinese Medicine may be beneficial for male specific conditions such as sexual dysfunction, male infertility, prostate concerns, etc, Though there is insufficient evidence in the standard required to substantiate the claims made. As with all medicines - Chinese and Western, individual results may vary.
Benign prostatic hyperplasia (enlarged prostate)
The prostate is a gland that produces the fluid that carries sperm during ejaculation. This gland surrounds the urethra which is the tube that carries urine out of the body. When the prostate grows bigger and becomes enlarged, it causes pressure on the urethra which then can cause urination and bladder problems
The cause of an enlarged prostate is unknown, though the likelihood of an enlarged prostate increases with age, usually around 50 years old. Symptoms include difficulty urinating, a weak stream, incomplete emptying of the bladder, frequent/ urgent urinating and/or lower abdominal pain. Without treatment this can result in bladder infections, bladder stones and/or kidney dysfunction.
Chinese medicine diagnosis generally consists of one of 3 main pathologies -
* Damp heat in lower jiao - bladder/kidney (swelling and fluid accumulation)
* Kidney deficiency (aging/weak kidney function)
* Qi and blood stagnation (obstructed circulation)
Signs and symptoms of damp heat in lower jiao: difficulty/pain urination, scanty, dark yellowish urine, burning or itching genitals, abdominal fullness, hot sensation/ sweating, dry mouth, red tongue with coating.
Signs and symptoms of Kidney deficiency: dribbling urination or hard to go, pale urine, achy lower back/hips or knees, fatigue, aversion to cold, pale skin, pale tongue, deep slow pulse.
Signs and symptoms of qi and blood stagnation: sharp pain in lower abdomen, pain urinating, pain in the limbs, irritability, fullness around ribs and abdomen, purple complexion, purple tongue, wiry pulse.
In Chinese Medicine, that treatment for enlarged prostate primarily consists of herbal medicine, with a formula developed specifically for each of the differing pathologies.
Acupuncture can also be used in conjunction with herbal medicine to strengthen the results.
Acupuncture is used on the meridians that either clear the fluid, strengthen the kidneys and/or improve circulation. You will be relieved to know that none of these points are located on the genitals. The most commonly used points are located on the lower abdomen, calves, ankles and lower back.
